Stalactites and Stalagmites

What you need to make stalactites:
two glass jars
two fishing sinkers
Epsom salts
string
a small plate

What to do:
1. Fill the glass jars with hot water from the tap and stir in about one tablespoon of Epsom salts. 2. Wet a piece of 18 inch long string, tie a sinker to either end and hang it in the water.
3. Leave it undisturbed in a warm place for about a week.
4. Come back daily and check it out, but dont touch it.

Jolly Jelly!

What you need to make a jelly rainbow:

Measuring jug
Boiling water
125 mls Cold water
125 mls
Packets of different colored jelly

Directions:

1. Empty jelly crystals into a measuring jug.
2. Add half a cup of boiling water. Get an adult to do this.
3. When it is stirred together, add a half cup of cold water.
4. Stir until the jelly crystals are completely dissolved.
5. Pour into a container and refrigerate until it is almost set.
6. Do steps one to five several times using different colors of jell7.
7. Use a glass container to layer the many colors of jelly to make a rainbow effect. Refrigerate until it is set hard.

Rainbows

Rainbows are made from water and sun light. Rarely you might see a rainbow that has red on the inside and violet on the outside.

Vicious Volcanoes

A volcano is a mountain that has a giant hole in the top. There is a tunnel going from the hole to the centre of the Earth. Whenever a volcano erupts some magma escapes from the Earth and bursts out the hole.

Ingredients:

1 cup self-raising flour
1 cup milk
1 egg

Method:

1. Pre-heat a large non-stick frying pan.
2. Add all ingredients into a bowl and mix until combined.
3. Lightly grease the pan with butter or cooking spray.
4. Cook large spoonfuls of batter until bubbles burst on top and the edges start to go dry.
5. Turn and cook other side until golden.

Seahorses have a secret..


And the secret is the male the eggs. Seahorses live in small compacted places. They like to eat shrimp and lots of other small kinds of fish. The eggs are in their for nine days then they hatch. Some Seahorses hatch 2-3,000 eggs. There are 32 different species of seahorses. They live from three to five years in the wild. The latin name for a seahorse is hippocampus.

Instructions


1. Cut out the template.
2. Decorate it the template .
3. From the corners of the square cut until you reach the line.
4. At every dot, fold it into the middle.
5. Sticky tape them there .
6. Poke a hole in the first quarter of the straw to fit the toothpick in.
7. Put your toothpick in. Make sure that paper is not touching the straw.
8. There you have it! Now put it in the wind.

How to Identify the Oak, Elm and Plane Trees

How to Identify a Plane Tree:
Leaves: The leaves on a Plane tree are big and have three points. It is kind of like a the leaf on the flag of Canada.
Bark: The bark on the Plane tree is a lighter then most trees. It is smooth like a pebal. There is a pattern on the bark of different colours.
Size: The size of the tree is large.
Latin Name: The latin name is Platanus


How to identify a Oak Tree:
Bark: The oak tree has large trunks of bark that are very rough.
Leaves:the leaves on a Oak Tree have eight points. They are a meduim size.
Size: The size of the Oak Tree is large.
Latin Name: The latin name is Quercus


How To identify an Elm Tree:
Leaves: The leaf of an Elm Tree is small. It is shaped like a normal leaf and has points that go around it.
Bark: The bark of an Elm is small and thick. It is all over the tree.
Size: The size of the Oak Tree is Meduim.

Make Mine Slime

You can make your own cornflour slime to learn about fluids and viscosity.

What you need:

cornflour
food colouring of your choice
a bowl for mixing
water

What to do:
1. Pour some cornflour into your mixing bowl.
2. Stir in small amounts of water until the cornflour has become a very thick paste.
3. To make the slime colurful stir about five drops of food colouring into the mixture.
4. Stir your slime slowly, this shouldn't be hard to do.
6. Stir your slime as fast as you can.
7. This should be almost impossible.
8. Now punch your slime hard and fast.
9. It should feel like you're punching a solid.

What's happening:


Anything that flows is called a fluid. This means liquids are fluids. Fluids like water which flow easily are said to have low viscosity, whereas fluids like cold honey which do not flow so easily are said to have a high viscosity. Cornflour slime is a special type of fluid that doesn't follow the usual rules of fluid behaviour. When a pressure is applied to slime, its viscosity increases and the cornflour slime becomes thicker. At a certain point, slime actually seems to lose its flow and behave like a solid. Cornflour slime is an example of a sheer-thickening fluid.

What you need to do:

Put the liquids into a cup and stir it. Then get a piece of paper that is not too thin. Dip the twig into a cup and then write with the twig on the paper. You will need some heat otherwise the invisible writing won't show up. you could use a heater or a oven. (If using the oven get adults help.)

What I think will happen:

I think that when you put all the ink on the page all the liquids react to the heat and they all will light up and you will be able to see all of the writing.


What Happened:


None of the liquids we tried worked.

Dancing Popcorn

Materials:

Water
Plastic cup
Popcorn kernels
1 Teaspoon
1Tablespoon
Vinegar
Sodium Bicarbonate

What to do:

Fill a plastic cup until it is 3 quarters full.
Measure half a teaspoon of Sodium Bicarbonate.
Add the Sodium Bicarbonate to the water and then stir it until it dissolves.
Add 4 Popcorn kernels into the cup.
Add 1 Tablespoon of vinegar to the cup.
Watch closely for about 2 minutes.

What Happens?

The popcorn kernels will sit in the water for a bit and then the bubbles will attach to the kernels and will start floating to the top of the cup and then the bubbles will pop and then the kernels will fall back down to the bottom of the cup. This will happen over and over again.

Make your own Moon Craters!

Materials:

A Plate

Flour

Four different sized rocks


What to do:

  1. First put some flour in a plate.

  2. Then get your rocks and put them in a row from smallest to largest.

  3. Get the largest rock and drop it into the flour from about 1 metre.

  4. When you have dropped it in pick it up carefully out of the flour and look at the hole.

  5. If you would like draw a diagram of your craters.

  6. Once you used the flour with all four rocks try it with sand.

My Prediction:


I predict that when you drop the rocks into the flour it will make a deeper hole because the flour is softer so it will have more effect than the sand because the sand is a lot harder and thicker.

Soak Some Potatoes

Slice a small potato lengthwise into several pieces that each have two flat sides. Place some of the pieces in one dish and the rest in another. Fill both dishes with water. Add two tablespoons of salt to one of the dishes, and label it "salt water." Let the potatoes soak for 15 minutes.Compare the potatoes. Is there a difference in firmness? Why?






I think that the salt water potato will go softer.





The salt water became softer and the normal water stayed the same.
